Standard TMS
vs
Accelerated TMS
When considering Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) as a treatment option, it's important to understand the distinction between Standard TMS and Accelerated TMS. While both approaches offer therapeutic benefits, they differ in terms of treatment duration, frequency, and intensity.
Standard TMS
Standard TMS typically involves a treatment schedule of 5 sessions per week over a course of 6 weeks and then titrates over the next 3 weeks for a total of 36 sessions. Having just one session per day allows time for recovery and integration between each session. This approach is well-suited for individuals who prefer a treatment plan that can be integrated into their regular routines without excessive time commitments. Standard TMS is effective for various mental health and neurological conditions, providing gradual symptom improvement over time. We have extensive experience with this approach as it has been FDA approved since October 2008.
Accelerated TMS
Accelerated TMS, also known as Intensive TMS, involves a more concentrated treatment schedule with higher session frequency. It consists of multiple daily sessions, 10 sessions per day, over the course of 5 consecutive days. This intensive treatment regimen provides a higher dose of magnetic stimulation in a shorter timeframe. Intensive TMS has shown promising results in research studies for certain conditions, especially major depressive disorder (MDD), yielding faster symptom reduction compared to Standard TMS. Accelerated TMS has been FDA cleared since September 2022.

Determining the Appropriate Approach
The choice between Standard TMS and Intensive TMS depends on various factors, including the individual's condition, treatment goals, and research findings. Research suggests that Intensive TMS may be particularly beneficial for individuals with severe or treatment-resistant depression who need more rapid and intensive intervention. It can offer a time-efficient option, providing significant symptom reduction within a shorter treatment duration. However, even if you are interested in Intensive TMS, The Healthy Brain Center TMS Psychiatrist will determine during your initial meeting, after gathering all pertinent information, if this is a viable option for you.
At The Healthy Brain Center, our experienced team stays up-to-date with the latest research and clinical guidelines to determine the most suitable treatment approach for each individual. We conduct a thorough assessment to identify the optimal TMS strategy, whether it's Standard TMS or Intensive TMS, to ensure the best possible outcomes for our patients.
